OMFG... that not only states my amazement towards the Ben Folds gig last night but also something which was projected onto the back wall at some point during the song “Hiroshima”.
OK... so... this was my first gig and I was getting very excited way before the show (though admittedly now as excited as Lucy was getting) the tube journey was great, me and Lucy danced and she also sang a bit, I have to say her singing is amazing. We arrived at “Shepherds bush empire” about an hour and a half early and started talking to people straight away. There were about 22 people already in the line when we got there but we were so excited that we didn't care, rather the same with the cold. We started looking around and found a group of people playing uno at the front of the line which was rather hellarious.
When we did get into the doors we ran in and instantly took place at the front. From our position we could not see the keys of the keyboard but we could see everything else which was amazing. The support act came on and both me and Lucy were couldn't believe it because they were a group of Geordie lasses called “Rachel Unthank and the Winterset”, from up north where we both come from. I am guessing they we were the only ones who actually understood what they were singing especially in the Northumberland one, to that song me and Lucy were bursting with excitement.
We then had to wait a little bit more but not too much as soon after they had left the stage Ben Folds came on and opened the show with “Effington” which has to be one of my more favourite songs. He actually forgot the words to some of the second which was hellarious. There was for the most a five piece with a triangle player who occasionally switched to the tambourine. There was also a guy with a French horn which was pretty neat and then there was the bassist and the drummer. The drummer was mental through the full show, he even broke one of the drumsticks during the first song which came flying towards me and Lucy landing close but just out of reach which was rather saddening.
There were parts when it was just Ben, the drummer and the bassist which made them sound deeper then when there were 5. there was also a bit when there was only Ben himself, at those points the whole atmosphere became a little quieter and Ben had just one small spotlight shining on him which has to be one of the most breathtaking scenes I have ever witnessed. After though the rest would come back on stage and the whole room would erupt.
Through the whole show there were other things to keep the audience involved, for example the large display being projected onto the back wall kept flashing up with hellarious pictures (such as OMFG) and there were certain songs which you could tell entranced the whole audience such as “Landed”
All in all his set lasted about 2 hours which was great. After the show had finished (at this point I forgot to ask someone if I could have the half a drumstick... Darn) we squeezed though the crowd to get outside as quickly as possible and get round to the stage door. At first there were about 12/13 people but they trundled off and we were left as a group of 6 by about 11.45ish when Ben came out. He stood and chatted for a while and let people have autographs and pictures with him. I asked if I could give him a piggy back, explaining that it is my life's ambition to give a celebrity a piggyback and he refused... in a nice way. He did gave me a hug though and an autograph with a little picture of a piano. He also hugged Lucy and said he would play “Brick” at his next gig when she requested it and then when he was walking away she asked him to make the shape of a less-then-three heart which he did while asking what it was, I think he knows now cos after he walked away again he turned around and did it to her again.
So next time there is a gig me and Lucy have made a promise that depending on where it is (Newcastle of London) either she will come up here or I will go down there so that will be great.
Anyway, I am off as I need rest so YEEEEEEY, it was epic, Ben folds is a god, a master and a guru.
Night all :D
